Salt gets under the glass

The pane itself does not mind salt. The painted metal channel it bonds to does. Bayside vehicles corrode around the windscreen aperture faster than inland ones, and corrosion under the glass is the hidden cause of most bayside windscreen leaks.

Talk it through with a technician
  • Pinchweld inspected and treated

When the screen comes out we check the metal underneath. Bonding new glass onto rust guarantees a leak in a year or two.

  • Boat and trailer vehicles

Tow rigs, dual cabs and wagons are the bayside standard. Bigger glass, same on-site service.

  • Ramp and gravel stone

Boat ramps, car parks and unsealed access tracks throw a lot of low stone at the base of the screen.

Bayside FAQs

What locals ask

General questions on the full FAQ page.

Does salt air actually damage a windscreen?

Not the glass, but everything holding it in. Salt works its way under the edge of the screen and corrodes the pinchweld — the painted metal channel the glass bonds to — along with the rubbers and cowl fixings. That is why bay-side vehicles leak around the windscreen far more often than inland ones of the same age.

What do you do about corrosion when replacing the glass?

We inspect the pinchweld once the old screen is out, and treat what we find before bonding the new one. Sealing a new windscreen onto rusted metal looks fine for a year and then leaks, so it is not something we will do. If the corrosion is extensive we will show you and talk through the options before going further.

Can you do a vehicle with a boat or trailer attached?

Yes, though we may ask you to unhitch if the trailer blocks access to one side. Tow rigs, dual cabs and wagons are routine — we fit truck and bus glass as core business, so a bayside 4WD is at the easier end of the range.
